Online safety training

Wilderness Awareness

Wilderness Awareness is a one-hour online course for workers and the public on the wildlife hazards found in Canadian outdoor work and recreation. It covers recognising bear and cougar activity, avoiding and deterring wildlife, keeping animals out of a camp or worksite, choosing and using deterrents, and the overlooked hazards: rodents, insects and spiders, ticks, rattlesnakes and coyotes.

You set up a training profile before you pay. It asks for more than a normal checkout does - your employer, your role, an emergency contact - because this is a training record, not a shopping cart. It is the file an auditor asks to see, and it is why you can pull your certificate up years from now instead of hunting for a PDF in your email. Give yourself five minutes and do it once.

About the course

What this course covers.

Most wildlife training stops at bears. Bears matter, and they take up the largest part of this course, but a field crew is far more likely to meet a tick, a wasp nest or a rodent-fouled shed than a grizzly. This course treats the outdoors as a whole: the large animals that cause the most serious encounters, and the small ones that cause the most frequent problems.

The bear section covers activity and behaviour, how to identify the species, human-wildlife conflict and how to respond to an encounter. It then works through deterrents in two groups, non-lethal and less-lethal, and how to choose and use them properly. Prevention runs through the whole section: how to stop attracting wildlife into a camp or worksite in the first place, which is where most conflicts start.

The second half covers what the course calls overlooked hazards: mice and rodents, insects and spiders, ticks, rattlesnakes, coyotes and cougar encounters. A worker finishes able to recognise the signs of bear and cougar activity, avoid encounters, keep a site clean of attractants, and respond correctly if threatened or attacked. A printable student manual is included for reference after the course.

Why it matters for compliance

Employers in every Canadian jurisdiction must assess the hazards their workers face, and wildlife is a real hazard for field and remote work. Wildlife awareness training is one of the controls a hazard assessment may call for, alongside site practices such as attractant management and check-in procedures.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

How is this different from Bear Awareness?

Bear Awareness focuses on bears. Wilderness Awareness covers bears in depth and adds cougars, coyotes, rattlesnakes, ticks, insects and spiders, and rodents. Choose this one when your crews work in varied terrain or seasons.

Does it cover bear spray?

It covers the selection and use of deterrents, grouped into non-lethal and less-lethal options. Follow your employer's procedures and the manufacturer's instructions for any deterrent you carry.

How much does the course cost?

The course is 64.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.

Does the certificate expire?

No expiry period is listed. Many employers refresh wildlife training each season or every few years.

Is it only for work?

No. It is designed for industry and the general public, so it suits anyone who hikes, camps or works outdoors.

Is there a printable reference?

Yes. A comprehensive student manual is available to print and keep.

What is the most important thing a crew can do to avoid wildlife conflict?

Manage attractants. Food, garbage and other scents draw animals into camps and worksites, and most conflicts start there. The course covers how to keep a site clean so animals have no reason to come close.

Does the course cover cougars?

Yes. Cougar encounters are covered alongside bears, coyotes and rattlesnakes, including how to recognise the signs of cougar activity and how to respond if one is encountered.
