About the course
What this course covers.
For a survey crew, a pipeline inspector, a forestry worker or a utility lineman, a bear is not an exotic risk; it is part of the job site. The aim of bear awareness training is that an encounter never happens, and that if it does, the worker already knows what to do. This course is built around that order: prevention first, response second.
The prevention half teaches how to identify grizzly, black and polar bears and what sets each one apart, the food sources that draw bears to an area, where bears are likely to be found, and how their activity changes from season to season. It covers the signs of bear activity a worker should recognise, how to travel safely through bear country, how to plan a safe campsite, and how to communicate sightings and activity to the rest of the crew so everyone benefits from what one person saw.
The response half covers bear encounters and how to judge the best response, how to use bear spray, the other deterrents available, and the emergency response plans a crew should have before it goes into the field. Activities and end-of-chapter quizzes check understanding along the way. At about an hour and a modest price, it is easy to put a whole seasonal crew through before the field season starts.

Why it matters for compliance
Employers must assess the hazards their workers face and put controls in place. For field and remote work, wildlife is a recognised hazard, and bear awareness training is a common control alongside attractant management, check-in procedures, deterrents and an emergency response plan.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
What bear species does the course cover?
- Grizzly, black and polar bears, the three species found in North America.
Does the course teach how to use bear spray?
- Yes. It covers how to use bear spray and the other deterrents available. Always follow your employer's procedures and the manufacturer's instructions for the spray you carry.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 39.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
How long is the certificate valid?
- 36 months from the completion date. Many employers also hold a refresher talk at the start of each field season.
How is this different from Wilderness Awareness?
- This course is all about bears. Wilderness Awareness covers bears plus cougars, coyotes, rattlesnakes, ticks, insects and rodents. On-Track Safety also carries Wilderness and Bear Awareness, a longer combined course.
Is it suitable for summer students?
- Yes. It is about an hour, works on a phone, and is a practical way to get seasonal workers trained before they go into the field.
Why does the course cover campsite planning?
- Many bear conflicts start where people eat and sleep. Planning a camp so food, garbage and cooking are managed away from sleeping areas removes the main reason a bear has to come close.
