Do you help with our Safety Fitness Certificate and carrier profile?
Yes. A carrier running commercial vehicles over 4,500 kg needs a Safety Fitness Certificate, and the province keeps a carrier profile that records your collisions, convictions and inspection results. The written NSC program On-Track builds - driver files, hours of service, trip inspections, maintenance records, cargo securement and incident reporting - is the evidence the province looks for behind that certificate, and keeping it current is how a carrier profile stays clean.
Can you get us ready for an NSC audit?
Yes. On-Track builds or updates your NSC program, trains drivers on the four required courses, and can walk your files the way an NSC compliance auditor would before the real audit, so gaps in driver files, logs or maintenance records are found and fixed first. If the audit does issue findings, we review them with you and set out the corrective action.
How much does an NSC program cost?
A complete NSC program is $495, plus GST. Driver training is priced per course through the online training portal, or through a free corporate training account that takes 20% off every course for three months.
Who needs an NSC safety program?
Any company that operates one or more commercial vehicles over 4,500 kg registered in a Canadian province is required to have a National Safety Code program in place. This includes trucking companies, oilfield service operators, construction contractors with heavy equipment haulers, utility fleet operators, and any business where drivers spend meaningful time behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle. The program must comply with the federal NSC standards and any additional provincial requirements in the operating province.
What is included in a complete NSC safety program?
A complete NSC program covers seven standard areas: driver qualification and file management, vehicle inspection requirements and defect reporting, hours-of-service compliance and log management, cargo securement standards and load documentation, accident and incident reporting protocol, safety training records, and a written safety policy signed by management. On-Track builds all seven components into a single coordinated program, formatted for the operating province and fleet size.
What are the four required NSC training courses?
The four required courses are Cargo Securement, Commercial Weights and Dimensions, Provincial Hours of Service, and Daily Trip Inspection. Cargo Securement covers load securing standards for flatdeck and enclosed loads, including a flatbed variant for operators hauling open loads. Commercial Weights and Dimensions covers legal load limits and axle weight distribution. Hours of Service covers the provincial rules for on-duty, driving, and rest cycles. Daily Trip Inspection covers the pre-trip and post-trip inspection cycle for commercial vehicles. All four are available through our online training portal and can be completed by drivers at their own pace from any device.
How long does it take to build an NSC program from scratch?
Most NSC program builds from scratch complete in two to four weeks, depending on how much of the safety program is already in place and how quickly the operator can provide the fleet and driver information needed to customise the documents. Operators with an existing but outdated program typically see a faster turnaround because some of the base documentation is already written.
Can drivers complete the training while they are already working?
Yes. The four required courses are delivered through our online training portal and can be completed on any device with an internet connection. Drivers can work through a course between shifts, at a yard computer, or on a phone. There is no classroom requirement and no set schedule. Operators with multiple drivers can roll out all four courses simultaneously and track completion through the portal.
Does the training meet provincial requirements across Western Canada?
The four required courses are built to the federal NSC standards and are available with provincial variants where provincial regulations differ from the federal baseline. The Hours of Service course has an Alberta-specific version and a generic version for British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. We confirm which version is appropriate for each operating province before training begins.
What happens if we get audited by a provincial carrier safety authority?
An NSC audit by a provincial carrier safety authority (Commercial Vehicle Enforcement in Alberta, MOTI in British Columbia, SGI in Saskatchewan, or MTO in Manitoba) will look for documented evidence of the same seven program areas your NSC program covers. An On-Track-built program is formatted to produce exactly that evidence on request. If an audit recommendation or deficiency is issued, we can review the finding and advise on the corrective action required.
Do we need to update the program every year?
NSC programs should be reviewed and updated annually, or whenever there is a change in the operation, the fleet size, the provinces of operation, or the applicable regulations. Hours-of-service rules and cargo securement standards see periodic updates at the federal and provincial level. Annual reviews catch regulatory changes before an audit or roadside enforcement check does.
