About the training recommendations.

The recommendations in this tool are based on OHS Act requirements and the pre-qualification standards used by major certifying partners and operators in Western Canada. The three priority tiers reflect the typical expectation at an audit or site access check:

  • Required

Training that is mandated under the provincial OHS Act or standard pre-qualification protocol for this role. Workers without this training are typically ineligible for site access.

  • Recommended

Training that is strongly expected by certifying partners and operators, even where the OHS Act does not mandate it explicitly. Auditors will look for evidence of this training.

  • Role-specific

Training that applies to workers who perform specific tasks within this role — equipment operation, chemical handling, or specialised work. Not universal, but required when the task applies.

Common questions about safety training requirements.

What safety training is required for construction workers in Alberta?
Construction workers in Alberta typically require WHMIS 2015, Fall Protection (for work above 3 metres), and Ground Disturbance 201 (Alberta) before working on most sites. Supervisors and foremen also require Leadership for Safety (Alberta). Equipment operators require additional role-specific training such as Rigging and Lifting or Elevated Work Platform certification.
What safety training is required for oil and gas workers in Alberta?
Oil and gas field workers in Alberta typically require H2S Awareness, WHMIS 2015, and Ground Disturbance 201 (Alberta). Supervisors require Leadership for Safety (Alberta) in addition. Drivers require Daily Trip Inspection and Hours of Service. Most ISNetworld pre-qualification accounts require evidence of these courses.
Does my province affect what safety training is required?
Yes. Some courses have province-specific versions that align with local OHS legislation and certifying partner protocols. Ground Disturbance 201 has an Alberta-specific version. Leadership for Safety has an Alberta version and a generic version for other provinces. The matrix adjusts recommendations based on your selected province.
How do I get a training plan for my whole team?
Contact On-Track Safety to build a training matrix for your operation. We scope the courses required by role, identify gaps against your pre-qualification requirements, and set up a corporate training portal so workers can complete their training online.
