About the course
What this course covers.
A supervisor who suspects a worker is impaired faces two risks at once. Do nothing, and an impaired worker may be operating equipment or driving. Act badly, and the company may be dealing with an unfair accusation, a grievance or a human rights complaint. Reasonable suspicion training exists to give supervisors a defensible way through the middle: recognise what they are seeing, confirm it, write it down, address it, and follow the company's testing process.
The course covers the dangers of workplace impairment caused by substance use and the symptoms of a substance use disorder, so supervisors understand what they may be looking at and why it matters beyond the immediate shift. It then explains the components of a standard drug and alcohol policy and the common testing methods, before teaching the indicators of use that a supervisor can observe on the job. The core of the course is the five-step process, worked through from first observation to the decision to test.
At nearly two hours, this is the more thorough of the reasonable suspicion courses On-Track Safety carries. It suits companies with a written drug and alcohol policy that names supervisors as the people who trigger reasonable suspicion testing, and that need those supervisors trained and documented before they are ever asked to use it.

Why it matters for compliance
Drug and alcohol testing in Canada is shaped by occupational health and safety law, human rights law and, where they apply, collective agreements and transportation rules, and those rules differ by province and sector. This course teaches the recognition and documentation skills a supervisor needs. It does not replace your company's written policy or legal advice on when testing is permitted.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
What is reasonable suspicion?
- Reasonable suspicion is a belief, based on specific and documented observations, that a worker may be impaired by drugs or alcohol at work. It is what lets a supervisor act on what they actually see rather than on a hunch, and it is the usual trigger for post-observation testing in a drug and alcohol policy.
What are the five steps?
- Observation, confirmation, documentation, confrontation and testing. The course works through each one, including how to confirm what you saw with a second person and how to document it before speaking to the worker.
Does this course tell me when testing is legal?
- No. Testing rules depend on your province, your sector, your written policy and any collective agreement. The course teaches recognition, documentation and process. Check your policy and get advice before applying testing in a new situation.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 99.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or open a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for three months.
How long is the certificate valid?
- 24 months from the completion date.
Is there a shorter option?
- Yes. On-Track Safety also carries shorter drug and alcohol courses for supervisors and a fit-for-work awareness course for all workers. This one is the most complete for supervisors who will actually run the process.
Why does the course cover substance use disorder?
- Because a reasonable suspicion conversation is about safety, not punishment. A supervisor who understands substance use disorder is more likely to handle the conversation respectfully, document what was observed rather than what was assumed, and point the worker toward the support the company's policy offers.
What should a supervisor document?
- The course teaches supervisors to document specific, observable facts: what they saw, heard and smelled, when and where, who else confirmed it, and what the worker said. Vague conclusions such as 'seemed high' do not hold up; specific observations do.
