About the course
What this course covers.
Supervisors are usually the first to notice when a worker is not fit for work. This course gives managers and supervisors a clear picture of how substance abuse affects a workplace, which substances are commonly abused, and what to do when a situation comes up on shift.
The course also covers building a drug- and alcohol-free workplace, education and testing programs, and the legal side of the topic. The course material is written with a North American, largely US, lens. Canadian employers use it alongside their own fit-for-work policy and Canadian law, including their provincial OHS legislation and human rights law.
This is the supervisor course. Workers who need the basics of being fit for work should take our worker course, Alcohol and Drug Awareness - Fit for Work, which covers personal responsibilities rather than how to lead and respond. Many companies assign both: the worker course to the crew and this one to the people who supervise them.

Why it matters for compliance
In Alberta, the OHS Act requires supervisors to take all reasonably practicable precautions to protect the workers they supervise, and to report unsafe acts and conditions to the employer. Workers must take reasonable care for their own and others' safety. The Alberta government describes impairment as any physical or psychological condition that affects a worker's ability to do their work safely, and advises that supervisors be trained to recognise it. Drug and alcohol dependence may also be a disability under the Alberta Human Rights Act, which brings a duty to accommodate. Other provinces have their own rules. This course is general training, not legal advice.
