About the course
What this course covers.
Due diligence is the standard a supervisor is measured against after something goes wrong. The question is not whether an incident happened, but whether the supervisor took every reasonable precaution to prevent it, and whether there is evidence that they did. A supervisor who understands that standard before an incident manages differently: they instruct, check, correct and document as a matter of routine, not as damage control.
This course starts with the framework that due diligence sits inside. The internal responsibility system explains how employers, supervisors and workers each carry a share of responsibility for safety, and the course sets out the roles, rights and responsibilities of each, the role of joint health and safety committees, and the worker's right to refuse unsafe work. It also covers psychologically safe workplaces, recognising that a supervisor's responsibility extends to the conditions that let workers speak up.
The second half defines due diligence and shows what meeting it looks like in practice: the elements of an OHS program, how workplace incidents should be responded to and managed, the legal implications for supervisors who fall short, and the duties of the health and safety officers who administer and enforce the law. It is a compact course for supervisors who need the essentials on file quickly; On-Track Safety also carries a longer due diligence course for supervisors who want more depth.

Why it matters for compliance
Supervisors carry their own legal duties under provincial OHS law; in Alberta they are set out in section 4 of the OHS Act, and workers' right to refuse dangerous work is in section 17. Across Canada, section 217.1 of the Criminal Code places a legal duty on anyone who directs how another person works to take reasonable steps to prevent bodily harm. Due diligence is how a supervisor shows those steps were taken.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
What is due diligence for a supervisor?
- Taking every reasonable precaution in the circumstances to protect workers, and being able to show it. In practice that means knowing the hazards, instructing workers, checking that they follow the rules, correcting problems, and keeping records.
What is the internal responsibility system?
- The principle that everyone in the workplace, from the employer to each worker, shares responsibility for health and safety according to their authority. The course explains how it works and where the supervisor fits.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 79.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
How is this different from Due Diligence for Supervisors (Online)?
- Both cover supervisor due diligence. This listing is the shorter, 50-minute course and includes the internal responsibility system, psychologically safe workplaces and health and safety officers. The other is longer if you want more depth.
Does it cover the right to refuse unsafe work?
- Yes, as part of the roles, rights and responsibilities section.
Does the certificate expire?
- No expiry is listed. Many employers refresh supervisor training every three years.
Why does a due diligence course cover psychological safety?
- Because a supervisor can only manage the hazards they hear about. In a psychologically safe workplace workers report hazards, near misses and concerns without fear, which is exactly the information a supervisor needs to show due diligence.
