About the course
What this course covers.
Every Canadian jurisdiction now treats workplace harassment and violence as a health and safety hazard, not only a human resources matter. In Alberta, Part 27 of the OHS Code requires employers to have a violence and harassment prevention plan and to train workers on it, and federally regulated workplaces have their own training requirement. The practical question for most employers is how to give every employee the same clear understanding of what is and is not acceptable, quickly and on the record.
This course is built for that. It starts with definitions and examples: quid pro quo and hostile environment harassment in physical, verbal and visual forms, retaliation, violence and bullying. It then covers provincial laws, protected categories and the consequences of discrimination and harassment. The middle section focuses on the workplace itself: supervisory responsibilities and liability, confidentiality, the employee complaint procedure, and the less obvious situations such as third parties like contractors and clients, off-site work events, social media, and gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation.
The course also addresses the judgement calls that cause most disputes: intent versus impact, consenting versus welcome, the reasonable person standard, power abuse and intimidation, and bystander intervention. Because it is written for employees, supervisors and managers together, a company can put its whole workforce through one course and then layer its own policy and complaint process on top.

Why it matters for compliance
In Alberta, Part 27 of the OHS Code requires employers to develop a violence and harassment prevention plan (section 390) and to train workers on it (section 391). Federally regulated workplaces follow the Work Place Harassment and Violence Prevention Regulations, which include their own training requirement. This course provides general training; employers must also train workers on their own plan and procedures.
Training outside Alberta?
The course covers laws from across Canada, so it works for employers with workers in several provinces. Employers should add training on their own province's specific requirements and their own prevention plan.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
Is harassment training required in Alberta?
- Alberta's OHS Code Part 27 requires employers to have a violence and harassment prevention plan and to train workers on it. This course gives the general foundation; employers also need to train workers on their own plan, reporting process and procedures.
Is this course for employees or supervisors?
- Both. It is written for managers, supervisors and employees, with sections on supervisory responsibilities and liability alongside the material every worker needs.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 37.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
Does it cover violence as well as harassment?
- Yes. The course has a harassment part and a violence part, each tested separately, with its own certificate of completion.
Does it cover contractors and clients?
- Yes. Third parties such as contractors, clients, vendors and temporary workers are covered, along with off-site work activities and social media.
How often should harassment training be repeated?
- No expiry period is listed for this course. Many employers refresh it every year, and whenever their prevention plan is reviewed or a significant change happens at the workplace.
What is the difference between intent and impact?
- Harassment is judged by its effect on the person, not only by what the other person meant. The course explains why a comment meant as a joke can still be harassment, and how the reasonable person standard is applied.
