Many Alberta crews cross the border for work. Pipelines, facilities, utilities and civil jobs don't stop at the provincial line. But ground disturbance rules and expectations aren't the same in every province. That's where a Saskatchewan ground disturbance add-on comes in.
What is the SK add-on?
A Saskatchewan add-on is a short course that builds on ground disturbance training your workers already have. It focuses on how ground disturbance works in Saskatchewan. That means the province's rules and best practices, its line locating process through Sask 1st Call, and how it differs from Alberta.
It's an add-on, not a full course. It doesn't replace foundational ground disturbance training. It fills the gap so workers understand Saskatchewan's requirements.
Who needs it?
It's designed for workers who have already completed Alberta Ground Disturbance 201 (Level II) training and will be working in Saskatchewan. Add-on courses usually require the full Alberta course first. Saskatchewan doesn't have its own Ground Disturbance 201 training standard, so client expectations vary. The add-on often suits:
- Supervisors and competent persons overseeing excavation in SK
- Equipment operators and spotters
- Crews working near buried pipelines or utilities in SK
If you're not sure what your client expects, ask them before you mobilize. Many owners set their own training requirements for contractors.
Why it matters
Hitting a buried line is dangerous and expensive. Knowing the local process for locates, notification and safe digging helps prevent that. It also shows your client that your crew is prepared.
