About the course
What this course covers.
In most shops the person running the overhead crane also rigs the load. This course puts both skills in one place. The crane portion covers crane types, pre-use checks, inspection requirements, safe operation, hazards and operator evaluation. The rigging portion covers hardware, slings, below-the-hook devices, hooks, manual hoists, hitches, load weights, sling tensions and lift planning.
It is different from our two single-topic courses. Overhead Crane - Operator Safety is a shorter course on operating the crane only, with no rigging portion. Rigging - Level 1 covers rigging only. If your workers do both jobs, this combined course saves buying two and gives you one certificate.
The course includes competency assessment forms for both overhead crane operation and rigging. A supervisor or other competent worker can use them to watch a worker on your own crane and record the result. That on-the-job evaluation is the part an online course cannot do for you.

Each module ends with a short knowledge check before you move on.
Overhead crane types and components

Pre-use checks and inspection requirements
What to check before each use, how inspections differ from pre-use checks, and when a crane must be taken out of service.
Safe crane operation and hazards
Moving loads smoothly, keeping loads away from people, signals, and the hazards that cause most overhead crane incidents.
Rigging hardware, slings and hooks
Shackles, eyebolts, hooks and other hardware, the main sling types, and how to inspect them and spot rejection signs.
Below-the-hook devices and manual hoists
Spreader bars, lifting beams and other below-the-hook devices, plus manual chain and lever hoists.
Hitches, weights, tensions and lift planning
Choosing a hitch, estimating load weight, how sling angle raises tension, and planning a lift before it starts.
Operator evaluation
How competency is evaluated on the job, and how to use the included assessment forms for crane operation and rigging.

Who it is for
Built for the people running the work
- Overhead, bridge, gantry and monorail crane operators who also rig their loads
- Shop, fabrication, warehouse and plant workers who move material with an overhead crane
- New operators who need both crane and rigging theory before an on-the-job evaluation
- Supervisors who evaluate crane operators and riggers and need a standard form to do it
- Employers who want one documented training record covering crane operation and rigging
What you walk away with
Able to do the job, not just describe it
- Do a proper pre-use check on an overhead crane and know when to tag it out
- Operate an overhead crane with smooth, controlled movements and keep the load path clear
- Inspect slings, hooks and hardware and remove damaged rigging from service
- Pick a suitable hitch and work out how sling angle affects sling tension
- Estimate load weight and plan a routine lift
- Use the included forms to support an on-the-job competency evaluation

Certificate and format
How the course runs
Your certificate
Pass the course at 70% or higher to earn a certificate of completion, valid for three years. You also get competency assessment forms for overhead crane operation and rigging. The certificate records the knowledge part of training. Your employer still has to evaluate and authorize each worker on the crane they will use.
- Fully online and self-paced, about 5 to 7 hours in total
- Two portions in one course: overhead crane operation and Level 1 rigging
- Short videos throughout, with quizzes along the way
- 70% to pass
- Includes competency assessment forms for crane operation and rigging
- Delivered through On-Track Safety's online training portal
Why it matters for compliance
In Alberta, Part 6 of the OHS Code says a lifting device may only be operated by a competent worker the employer has authorized. If the employer asks, the operator must show they are competent in the crane's operation, load charts and the code of signals, and must know the recent entries in the crane's log book. Overhead cranes must also meet the CSA B167 standard for maintenance and inspection. Part 21 of the Code covers rigging: it must be inspected before each period of continuous use in a shift, slings must meet ASME B30.9, below-the-hook devices must meet ASME B30.20, and damaged slings and hooks must come out of service. An online course covers the knowledge. The employer still has to evaluate competency on the job.
Training outside Alberta?
Every province has its own crane and rigging rules, and most point to the same CSA and ASME standards. The course content applies across Canada, but check your own province's OHS regulation for the operator and inspection details.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
What's the difference between Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 and Overhead Crane - Operator Safety?
- Overhead Crane - Operator Safety covers operating the crane only and runs about 1.5 hours. Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 adds a full rigging portion (slings, hardware, hitches, tensions and lift planning), runs about 5 to 7 hours, and includes competency assessment forms. Choose the combined course if your operators also rig loads.
Is Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 the same as Rigging - Level 1?
- No. Rigging - Level 1 covers rigging only. Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 includes similar rigging topics plus a full overhead crane operation portion, so it suits workers who both run the crane and rig the load.
Does an online overhead crane course make a worker qualified in Alberta?
- Not on its own. Under the Alberta OHS Code, only a competent worker authorized by the employer may operate a lifting device, and the operator must be able to show competence when asked. The online course covers the knowledge. The employer still has to evaluate the worker on the crane they will use.
What is the pass mark for Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1?
- The pass mark for Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 is 70%.
How long does Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 take?
- Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 takes about 5 to 7 hours online. It is self-paced, so workers can stop and pick up where they left off.
What are the competency assessment forms in this course?
- Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 includes assessment forms for overhead crane operation and for rigging. A supervisor or competent worker uses them to watch a worker on the job and record whether they can do the work safely.
How long is the Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 certificate valid?
- The Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 certificate is valid for three years. Many employers refresh sooner if a worker changes cranes, has an incident or shows unsafe habits.
How much does Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 cost?
- Overhead Crane & Rigging Level 1 is $194.99 per seat in the On-Track Safety course store.
