Rigging - Level 1 online safety training

About the course

What this course covers.

Rigging is the process of securing a load so a crane or hoist can lift it, and it is unforgiving of guesswork. The wrong sling, the wrong hitch, a miscalculated load weight - any of them drops the load. This course gives a worker the Level 1 grounding to rig a load correctly.

Built using the most current ASME standards, the 2020 Rigging - Level 1 course covers rigging hardware, slings, below-the-hook lifting devices, hooks, and manual hoists. It works through sling hitches, sling tensions, and weight calculations, and clarifies the rigging misconceptions that get loads dropped. Students also gain access to a library of online competency assessment forms to support their learning.

Companies use the course to give workers a documented Level 1 rigging foundation and the training record an auditor or a contractor pre-qualification platform looks for.

Course outline

4 modules, start to finish

Each module ends with a short knowledge check before you move on.

  1. Rigging hardware and slings

Rigging hardware, slings, below-the-hook lifting devices, and hooks - the equipment a rig is built from.

  2. Manual hoists

Manual hoists and how they are used to lift and position a load.

  3. Sling hitches and tensions

The types of sling hitches and the sling tensions each one places on the rigging.

  4. Weight calculations

Calculating load weight, and clarifying the common rigging misconceptions that lead to dropped loads.

What learners say

Trusted by Canadian crews

4.4 / 5 from 12,198 learner reviews
  • The weight-calculation and sling-tension sections are the heart of it. A new hand finishes this understanding why the hitch matters, not just how to throw a sling.

    Travis L.

    Rigging Supervisor

  • Built to current ASME standards and accepted by our auditor. The competency assessment forms are a useful bonus.

    Dana R.

    Safety Coordinator

  • Solid Level 1 grounding. The section clarifying rigging misconceptions cleared up a couple of habits I had picked up wrong.

How the course runs

Your certificate

Testing after each module reinforces the material, and an overall mark of 70 percent earns the certificate; the course can be repeated once if the pass mark is not met on the first attempt. On completion the worker downloads and prints a certificate of completion valid for three years from the completion date.

  • Fully online and self-paced - about 5 hours of content
  • Built to the most current ASME rigging standards
  • Includes a library of online competency assessment forms
  • Mobile-friendly - start on a laptop, finish on a phone
  • Pass mark is 70 percent overall, with one retake

Why it matters for compliance

Occupational health and safety legislation requires that workers who rig loads are trained and competent. This course gives a Level 1 rigging foundation and the documented training record a COR auditor or a contractor pre-qualification platform looks for.
