About the course
What this course covers.
Health and safety on a manufacturing or industrial site is a shared responsibility, and every worker needs to understand their role in it. This course gives that understanding by walking through the parts of a health and safety system and connecting each one to Alberta's OHS legislation. It suits plant workers, supervisors and anyone new to the safety program at an industrial worksite.
The course opens with the benefits of a health and safety system and the basics of the legislation, then works through the core of any program: hazard assessments and hazard controls. It covers the role of the health and safety committee or representative, training and competency, and the safety measures that apply to visitors, contractors and other parties on site. Preventative maintenance and worksite inspections follow, showing how equipment and conditions are kept safe over time.
The later sections cover incident prevention and investigations, emergency preparedness and response plans, and management commitment and involvement, which holds the whole system together. The course ends with a final scenario that tests whether the learner can apply what they have learned. Because the sections mirror the elements of a typical safety management system, many employers use it to help workers understand how their own company's program fits together.

Why it matters for compliance
Alberta's OHS framework is made up of the OHS Act, the OHS Regulation and the OHS Code. The Code includes parts on joint health and safety committees and representatives and on emergency preparedness and response, among many others. This course introduces the framework; employers must also train workers on their own program and site-specific hazards.
Training outside Alberta?
This course is built on Alberta legislation. Workers in other provinces should look for training based on their own province's OHS law, such as Health and Safety in the Workplace for a general Canadian introduction.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
Is this course specific to Alberta?
- Yes. It introduces Alberta's OHS Act, Regulation and Code. The principles of a health and safety system apply elsewhere, but the legislation is Alberta's.

- It is written for manufacturing and industrial worksites, but the elements it covers, from hazard assessment to emergency preparedness, apply to most workplaces with a formal safety program.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 39.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
Does it help workers understand our safety program?
- It covers the elements most safety management systems are built from, which helps workers see how their own company's program fits together. Pair it with training on your actual program and procedures.
