About the course
What this course covers.
Every Canadian worker is covered by occupational health and safety law, yet many start a job without knowing what that law gives them or asks of them. Workers and employers both pay for inadequate safety, and both benefit when safe practice becomes the normal way of working. This course is a plain introduction to that system, based on the provincial OHS Acts, for anyone who needs the basics before site-specific training.
It starts with who does what. Workers, employers, health and safety committees and government each have a defined role, and understanding those roles helps a worker know who to go to and what to expect. The course then sets out the three basic rights every Canadian worker has: the right to know about hazards, the right to participate in health and safety, and the right to refuse unsafe work.
The remaining sections introduce common workplace hazards and the prevention programs and procedures employers use to control them, along with basic workplace investigation procedures so a worker understands what happens after an incident. It works as a general orientation module for new hires, temporary and seasonal staff, and office workers who need safety basics on file, and it pairs naturally with a site orientation that covers the specific hazards of the workplace.

Why it matters for compliance
Every Canadian province and territory has its own OHS Act, and all of them give workers the right to know, to participate and to refuse dangerous work. In Alberta, the right to refuse dangerous work is set out in section 17 of the OHS Act. This course gives a general introduction; employers must still provide orientation and training specific to their own workplace and hazards.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
Who should take this course?
- New hires, temporary and seasonal staff, office workers and anyone who needs a short introduction to workplace health and safety in Canada before site-specific training.
Does it cover the right to refuse unsafe work?
- Yes. It covers the right to know, the right to participate and the right to refuse unsafe work.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 49.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
Does it replace a site orientation?
- No. It covers general rights, roles and hazards. Every worker still needs an orientation to the specific hazards, rules and emergency procedures of their own workplace.
Is it specific to one province?
- No. It is based on the provincial OHS Acts generally. Section numbers and details differ by province, so employers should add their own province's specifics.
How long does it take?
- About 30 minutes.
What are the roles of a health and safety committee?
- A committee or representative brings workers and the employer together to identify hazards, recommend improvements and take part in inspections and investigations. The course explains this role alongside those of workers, employers and government.
Is this course good for workers new to Canada?
- Yes. It explains how workplace health and safety works in Canada, including the rights every worker has, which is useful for anyone whose previous work experience was in another country.
