You set up a training profile before you pay. It asks for more than a normal checkout does - your employer, your role, an emergency contact - because this is a training record, not a shopping cart. It is the file an auditor asks to see, and it is why you can pull your certificate up years from now instead of hunting for a PDF in your email. Give yourself five minutes and do it once.

About the course

What this course covers.

Noise-induced hearing loss creeps up slowly. It starts with high-pitched sounds, so many workers do not notice it until speech gets hard to follow. By then the damage is permanent.

This course covers the science of hearing loss, the main types of hearing protection and their pros and cons, and how to pick, fit and maintain a device. It suits new hires, workers moving into a noisy area, and anyone who needs a quick refresher.

It is a focused hearing course. If you need broader training that covers hard hats, eye protection, gloves and more, take our Personal Protective Equipment for Employees (PPE) course. Many employers assign both.

How the course runs

Your certificate

Pass the final test at 80% or higher. You may repeat the course twice if you need to. When you pass, you can print your certificate of completion from the training portal. The course covers the knowledge part; under the Alberta OHS Code your employer must still make sure your hearing protection is fit tested to you.

  • Fully online and self-paced, about 15 minutes
  • Works on a computer, tablet or phone
  • 80% to pass, with up to two repeats of the course
  • Printable certificate of completion
  • Delivered through On-Track Safety's online training portal

Why it matters for compliance

In Alberta, Part 16 of the OHS Code sets the noise rules. A worker's exposure must not go over 85 dBA averaged over 8 hours, with shorter times allowed at higher levels (Schedule 3, Table 1). If noise may be above 82 dBA, the employer must have a noise exposure assessment done. Where workers are exposed to excess noise, the employer needs a noise management program that includes training on hearing protection, and every hearing protector must meet CSA Z94.2 and be fit tested to the worker.

Training outside Alberta?

Other provinces and federally regulated workplaces have their own noise limits and hearing conservation rules. The fitting and care skills in this course apply anywhere, but check your own province's law for limits and testing schedules.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

What does Hearing Protection Training cover?

Hearing Protection Training covers how noise damages hearing, how to prevent hearing loss, the types of hearing protection and their pros and cons, and how to choose, fit and maintain earplugs and earmuffs.

How long is the hearing protection training online course?

The online Hearing Protection Training course takes about 15 minutes. It is self-paced, so you can finish it on a break or at the start of a shift.

What is the pass mark for Hearing Protection Training?

You need 80% to pass Hearing Protection Training. If you do not pass, you may repeat the course up to twice.

Is hearing protection training required in Alberta?

In Alberta, when workers are exposed to excess noise, the employer's noise management program must include training workers in the correct use of noise controls and hearing protection. An online hearing protection course is a simple way to deliver and record that training.

Does this course include a hearing protection fit test?

No. Hearing Protection Training teaches how to fit earplugs and earmuffs, but the Alberta OHS Code requires the employer to have each worker's hearing protection fit tested using the manufacturer's method. That is done on the job.

What is the difference between Hearing Protection Training and the PPE course?

Hearing Protection Training is a 15-minute course only about earplugs and earmuffs. Personal Protective Equipment for Employees (PPE) is a longer course covering head, eye, hand, foot, hearing and other protection. Take the PPE course for broad coverage, or this one for a focused hearing refresher.

How much does Hearing Protection Training cost?

Hearing Protection Training is $29.99 per seat in the On-Track Safety course store.
