About the course
What this course covers.
Working at height is nerve-wracking for good reason: falls remain one of the leading causes of serious injury on Canadian worksites. The good news is that fall protection systems can prevent a fall or arrest one safely, but only if the worker understands the system they are using. A harness clipped to the wrong anchor, a lanyard too long for the clearance below, or a damaged connector can turn a stopped fall into a serious injury.
This course builds that understanding at an awareness level. It starts with fall hazards and the types of fall protection systems, then works through each component: anchors, full body harnesses and their five classes, connecting hardware and devices, and shock absorbers. It explains the physics a worker needs to get right, maximum arrest force, free fall distance and clearance, so they can tell whether a system will actually stop them before they hit something.
The practical sections cover basic inspection and care requirements, how to don a full body harness correctly, and fall protection plans and rescue planning, because arresting a fall is only half the job and a worker hanging in a harness needs to be rescued quickly. Each chapter has its own test at a 70 percent pass mark and can be repeated as needed. Companies use it as a fall protection foundation before site-specific and equipment-specific training.

Why it matters for compliance
In Alberta, Part 9 of the OHS Code requires employers and supervisors to protect a worker who may fall 3 metres or more (section 139), to have a fall protection plan where workers are not protected by guardrails (section 140), and to instruct workers in the fall protection system (section 141). Other provinces set their own height thresholds. This course provides awareness training; workers also need instruction on the specific system and site.
Training outside Alberta?
This is a Canada-wide awareness course. Alberta workers who need Alberta-specific training can take Fall Protection (Alberta).
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
When is fall protection required in Alberta?
- Under Part 9 of the Alberta OHS Code, a worker must be protected from falling if they may fall 3 metres or more, and in some other situations set out in the Code. Other provinces have their own thresholds.
Does this course cover harness classes?
- Yes. It covers full body harnesses and their five classes, along with anchors, connectors and shock absorbers.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 49.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
Is an awareness course enough to work at height?
- It provides the knowledge foundation. Workers must also be instructed on the specific fall protection system and site they will use, and employers must have a fall protection plan where required.
What is the pass mark?
- 70 percent on each chapter. Chapters can be repeated as needed.
How long is the certificate valid?
- 36 months from the completion date.
Why does clearance matter?
- Clearance is the distance needed below a worker for a fall arrest system to stop a fall before the worker hits the ground or an obstruction. Free fall distance, lanyard and shock absorber deployment and harness stretch all add to it, and the course explains how to account for them.
Why is rescue planning part of fall protection?
- A worker suspended in a harness after a fall needs to be rescued quickly. A fall protection plan should include how that will happen before work at height starts, and the course covers why.
