About the course
What this course covers.
Driving is often the most dangerous thing an office worker, technician or sales representative does all week, and distraction is one of the biggest reasons why. Phones get the attention, and rightly so, but eating, adjusting a navigation screen, reading a work order at a light or simply thinking about the next job all take attention away from the road. Every province now restricts handheld device use while driving, yet distraction remains a leading factor in collisions.
This course is built for the employee driver, not the professional trucker. It starts with the cost of distracted driving, in collisions, injuries and lost lives as well as money. It then explains multi-tasking and distraction: why the brain cannot fully attend to driving and something else at the same time, even when it feels like it can. The dangers of using a cell phone while driving get their own section, because a phone combines visual, manual and mental distraction in one device.
The last two sections are practical. The first covers what to do before you drive to eliminate distractions: setting navigation, silencing the phone, planning calls and organising the vehicle. The second covers how to fight distraction once on the road. A printable student manual is included. Employers use the course as part of a driving policy for anyone who uses a company or personal vehicle for work.

Every Canadian province restricts the use of handheld electronic devices while driving, and employers whose workers drive for work are expected to treat driving as a workplace hazard. Distracted driving training supports a company driving policy; drivers must still follow the rules of their own province.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
Who should take this course?
- Any employee who drives a car, van or small truck for work, whether it is a company vehicle or their own. Professional truck drivers may prefer a commercial defensive driving course.
Is distracted driving only about phones?
- No. Phones are covered in their own section, but the course also deals with eating, adjusting controls, reading and mental distraction, and the general problem of multi-tasking behind the wheel.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 49.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
How long does it take?
- About 30 minutes.
Does the certificate expire?
- No expiry is listed. Many employers refresh driving awareness training every year or two as part of their driving policy.
Is there a version for drivers of larger vehicles?
- Yes. On-Track Safety carries Distracted Driving Prevention and defensive driving courses for small and large vehicles. This course is aimed at everyday employee drivers.
Can an employer make this course part of a driving policy?
- Yes. Many employers assign it to every worker who drives for work, alongside a written policy on phone use and a sign-off that the worker has read it. The certificate gives a record of the training.
Does the course include a reference to keep?
- Yes. A printable student manual is included, which is useful for reviewing the before-you-drive checklist.
