Defensive Driving online safety training

About the course

What this course covers.

Most of the time a driver gets where they are going safely. It takes one mistake, at the wrong moment, to change that. Defensive driving is the deliberate, attitude-first approach that keeps the odds in a driver's favour, and it is a skill that has to be kept sharp.

The course works through what defensive driving is, vehicle safety and maintenance, and distracted driving and its risks. It covers the core defensive driving techniques - following, braking, steering, reversing, lane changes, and intersections - then collision avoidance, and finishes with winter driving and preparing for adverse conditions.

Companies use Defensive Driving to train any worker who drives for the job, to bring down collision and violation rates, and to give a documented training record. It suits drivers of light and personal vehicles; drivers of large commercial vehicles are better served by the Defensive Driving for Large Vehicles course.

What learners say

Trusted by Canadian crews

  • We have staff driving company vehicles every day, not just truck drivers. This course covers the everyday driving our people actually do, winter included.

    Renee D.

    Fleet Safety

  • The winter driving and distracted driving modules are the ones our drivers needed. Collision claims are down since we made it required.

    Curtis P.

    Operations Manager

  • Practical, not preachy. The collision avoidance section gave me a system for the close calls that used to just rattle me.

Certificate and format

How the course runs

Your certificate

A mark of 80 percent earns the certificate, and the course can be repeated twice if the pass mark is not met on the first attempt. On completion the driver downloads and prints a certificate of completion valid for three years from the completion date.

  • Fully online and self-paced - about 90 minutes of content across six modules
  • Mobile-friendly - start on a laptop, finish on a phone
  • Instant access as soon as the course is purchased
  • Includes a full module on winter and adverse-condition driving
  • Pass mark is 80 percent, with two retakes included

Why it matters for compliance

A consistent defensive driving approach reduces the collisions and violations that drive up a company's insurance costs and safety record. Defensive Driving gives an employer a documented training record showing that workers who drive for the job have been trained.
