You set up a training profile before you pay. It asks for more than a normal checkout does - your employer, your role, an emergency contact - because this is a training record, not a shopping cart. It is the file an auditor asks to see, and it is why you can pull your certificate up years from now instead of hunting for a PDF in your email. Give yourself five minutes and do it once.

About the course

What this course covers.

A split-second decision behind the wheel can change a life, and most employees who drive for work have never had any driver training since they got their licence. Defensive driving is the habit of driving to prevent collisions caused by other people, conditions and your own mistakes, rather than simply following the rules of the road. This course teaches it to the everyday employee driver in a car, SUV or light pickup.

It begins before the vehicle moves: how to prepare to drive safely, from adjusting the vehicle and planning the route to making sure the driver is fit to drive. The core of the course covers speeding, following distance and stopping, the three areas where a few seconds of margin make the biggest difference to whether a driver can avoid a collision. It then works through safe driving tips and safe choices in specific situations and conditions.

The final section covers what to do in case of a collision, so a driver knows how to protect themselves and others and what to report. Employers use the course as part of a driving policy for staff who drive company vehicles or their own vehicles on company business, and as a short refresher after a minor incident.

Why it matters for compliance

Employers whose workers drive as part of their job are expected to treat driving as a workplace hazard and manage it, often through a driving policy, vehicle maintenance and driver training. This course supports that policy. It is not an insurance or licence demerit reduction course.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Who is this course for?

People who drive cars, SUVs, vans or light pickups for work. Drivers of large commercial vehicles should take Defensive Driving - Large Vehicles instead.

Is this a demerit reduction course?

No. It is employer-focused defensive driving training. On-Track Safety carries a separate demerit reduction defensive driving course for Alberta drivers.

How much does the course cost?

The course is 54.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.

How long does it take?

About 45 minutes.

Does it cover what to do after a collision?

Yes. The final section covers what to do in case of an accident.

Why does following distance get so much attention?

Because it is the margin that lets a driver react to someone else's mistake. Speed, following distance and stopping are grouped together in the course because they decide whether there is room to avoid a collision.

Does the certificate expire?

No expiry period is listed. Many employers refresh driver training every two to three years.

Does the course help after a minor collision?

Yes. Many employers assign it as a short refresher after a minor incident, alongside a review of what happened. The section on accidents also covers what to do at the scene.
