About the course
What this course covers.
A safety program that only reacts to incidents can only ever get as good as its last bad day. Continuous improvement is the idea, borrowed from quality management, that a program gets better by measuring, adjusting and measuring again, whether or not anything has gone wrong. No matter how safe an organisation already is, there is always room to improve, and the organisations that keep improving are the ones that build the habit into how they work.
This course introduces that habit. It defines continuous improvement and sets out its direct and indirect benefits for occupational health and safety, from fewer incidents to better morale and efficiency. It then walks through what a continuous improvement workflow looks like in practice, the repeating cycle of planning a change, carrying it out, checking the result and acting on what was learned.
The most practical part is measurement. The course explains the difference between lagging indicators, which count what has already happened, and leading indicators, which track the activities that prevent incidents, and the advantages of each. It closes on how quality management tools can be used to improve OHS performance. It suits safety committees and leadership teams looking for a shared language before they set targets or review their program.

Why it matters for compliance
Recognised health and safety management systems, including certificate of recognition programs and ISO 45001, expect an organisation to review its program and improve it over time. This course covers the concepts behind that expectation; it does not certify a management system.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
What is the difference between leading and lagging indicators?
- Lagging indicators measure outcomes that have already happened, such as injuries and lost time. Leading indicators measure the activities that prevent them, such as inspections completed, hazards corrected and training delivered. The course explains the advantages of each and why a program needs both.
Who should take this course?
- Managers, supervisors and safety committee members: the people who review safety performance and decide what to change.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 79.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
Does this course help with an annual program review?
- It gives the people running the review a shared understanding of continuous improvement and indicators. The review itself still follows your own program and any standard you work to.
How long does it take?
- About 30 minutes.
Does the certificate expire?
- No expiry period is listed for this course.
How does continuous improvement apply to a small company?
- The workflow scales down. A small company can pick a few leading indicators, review them at a regular safety meeting, change one thing at a time, and check whether it worked. The course gives the vocabulary and the cycle; the size of the program is up to you.
Is this course useful for safety committee members?
- Yes. Committee members are often asked to review incident trends and recommend changes. Understanding leading and lagging indicators and the improvement cycle makes those reviews more useful.
