Online supervisor training

Supervisor Skills

Supervisor Skills is a one-hour online course on the people side of supervision. It covers resolving conflict between employees, dealing with difficult employees and personal problems, discipline and termination, layoffs, and crisis management, finishing with a case study that puts the lessons together.

Duration

1h

Certificate, valid 36 month(s)

Coverage

All Provinces

You set up a training profile before you pay. It asks for more than a normal checkout does - your employer, your role, an emergency contact - because this is a training record, not a shopping cart. It is the file an auditor asks to see, and it is why you can pull your certificate up years from now instead of hunting for a PDF in your email. Give yourself five minutes and do it once.

About the course

What this course covers.

Every job has its own challenges, but a supervisor's hardest ones usually involve people rather than tasks. Two workers who cannot stand each other, an employee whose performance is slipping, a worker going through something at home, a layoff that has to be delivered, a crisis on site: none of these come with a manual, and most new supervisors handle them for the first time with no preparation at all. This course is that preparation.

It is built around facing tough situations with realism, restraint and resolve. The lessons work through resolving conflict between employees by choosing the most appropriate strategy for the situation, dealing with difficult employees, and handling employees' personal problems with sensitivity and fairness. The discipline and termination lesson shows how to support an employee with performance issues while, at the same time, building a fair and documented case if discipline or termination becomes necessary.

The last lessons cover the situations supervisors dread most: dealing with layoffs in a way that minimises their negative effects on the people leaving and the people staying, and taking control and responsibility in a crisis. A closing case study asks the learner to apply what they have learned. Companies use the course for newly promoted supervisors and as a short, practical refresher for experienced ones.

Why it matters for compliance

This is a people-management course rather than a legislated safety course. Discipline, termination and layoffs are governed by provincial employment standards, human rights law and any collective agreement, so supervisors should follow their company's policies and get HR or legal advice for specific cases.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Is this a health and safety course?

It is a supervisory skills course focused on managing people. For the legal and safety side of supervision, pair it with a course such as Supervisor's Role or Due Diligence for Supervisors.

Does it cover how to fire someone?

It covers discipline and termination as a process: supporting an employee with performance issues while building a fair, documented case if termination becomes necessary. Specific terminations should follow company policy and HR or legal advice.

How much does the course cost?

The course is 49.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.

How long does it take?

About one hour, self-paced, with a case study at the end.

How long is the certificate valid?

36 months from the completion date.

Is there a longer supervisor program?

Yes. Supervisory and Management Skills is a full-day program, and Effective Supervision is another short option. This course is the quick, practical introduction to the people side of the job.

Is this course useful for experienced supervisors?

Yes. Many experienced supervisors learned people management by trial and error. The course gives them a structured way to handle conflict, discipline and layoffs, and the case study tests whether the approach has stuck.

Does it cover crisis situations?

Yes. The crisis management lesson covers taking control and responsibility when something goes wrong, from a serious incident to sudden disruption on the team.
