About the course
What this course covers.
Whether the load is metal pipe, a broken-down truck or a stack of lumber, the outcome of poor securement is the same list: fines, delays, damaged goods, injuries and sometimes deaths. Most of it comes from a short list of repeat mistakes. This course is organised around avoiding them, starting with who writes the rules and ending with the cargo types that have rules of their own.
The regulatory section introduces the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, the North American Cargo Securement Standard and the National Safety Code, with emphasis on Standard 10, the cargo securement standard. The practical sections cover the different securement systems and their components, the top five cargo violations and the methods that prevent them, and safe handling: securing the load, inspecting it, removing devices safely and the protective equipment the job needs.
The last section covers special types of cargo with their own securement requirements: logs, bundles, metal coils, paper rolls, concrete pipe, intermodal containers, vehicles, roll-on/roll-off and hook lift containers, and boulders. A driver finishes able to plan securement for a load, inspect it after loading, mid-trip and before unloading, and recognise when a load needs more than the general rules.

Why it matters for compliance
National Safety Code Standard 10 sets the cargo securement requirements adopted by Canadian jurisdictions and is aligned with the North American Cargo Securement Standard used in the United States. Each province enforces the standard through its own legislation, so carriers should also confirm their provincial requirements.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
What is NSC Standard 10?
- Standard 10 is the cargo securement standard within Canada's National Safety Code. It sets out how cargo must be contained, immobilised or secured on commercial vehicles, and it is aligned with the North American Cargo Securement Standard.
Does this course cover both Canada and the United States?
- It introduces the governing bodies and standards in both countries and emphasises the Canadian National Safety Code. Because the two systems are aligned, the securement methods apply on both sides of the border.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 49.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for three months.
Which special cargo types are covered?
- Logs, bundles, metal coils, paper rolls, concrete pipe, intermodal containers, vehicles, roll-on/roll-off and hook lift containers, and boulders.
Does the certificate expire?
- No expiry is listed for this course. Many carriers and clients expect securement training to be refreshed every two to three years.
Is there an Alberta-specific securement course?
- Yes. Cargo Securement - Alberta and the Cargo Securement Core Program reference Alberta's commercial vehicle regulations alongside the national standard.
What are the most common cargo securement violations?
- The course works through the top five violations found at roadside and the securement methods that prevent each one. Most come down to too few tiedowns for the load, damaged or worn devices, and cargo that is not blocked or braced against shifting.
When should a driver re-check the load?
- The course covers inspection directly after loading, during the trip and before unloading. Loads settle and straps loosen as the truck moves, so the check after the first stretch of driving is as important as the check in the yard.
