Online driver training - Alberta

Alberta Provincial Hours of Service (School Bus and Passenger Bus/Van)

Alberta Provincial Hours of Service (School Bus and Passenger Bus/Van) is an online course on the provincial hours of service rules as they apply to drivers of school buses, buses and passenger vans in Alberta. It covers duty status, work-shift limits and breaks, exemptions, daily log requirements and the 160 kilometre radius logbook exemption that most local passenger runs operate under.

You set up a training profile before you pay. It asks for more than a normal checkout does - your employer, your role, an emergency contact - because this is a training record, not a shopping cart. It is the file an auditor asks to see, and it is why you can pull your certificate up years from now instead of hunting for a PDF in your email. Give yourself five minutes and do it once.

About the course

What this course covers.

Hours of service rules are usually taught with a tractor-trailer in mind, but Alberta's provincial regulation also covers commercial passenger vehicles: buses and vans with a designed seating capacity of 11 or more passengers. For a school bus or charter operator, that means drivers carrying children or the public are held to the same work-shift limits as a freight driver, and the operator carries the same responsibility for monitoring them. This listing packages the Alberta rules for that audience.

The course covers what a Safety Fitness Certificate is, what makes a vehicle a National Safety Code vehicle, and which employees the regulation applies to. It then explains the four duty statuses, the definition of a work-shift and its limits, mandatory breaks, the reduced rest provision and co-driver requirements, followed by the exemptions for adverse driving conditions and emergencies. The documentation section covers daily log requirements, duty status locations, off-duty logs, log retention and supporting documents.

For most school bus and local passenger runs, the most important section is the last one: the 160 kilometre radius logbook exemption. Split shifts with morning and afternoon runs are common in student transportation, and drivers often assume a local route means no hours of service rules at all. The course is clear that the exemption removes the logbook, not the limits, and that the driver must still be back and released within 15 hours of starting the work-shift.

Why it matters for compliance

Alberta's Drivers' Hours of Service Regulation (AR 317/2002) applies to commercial passenger vehicles with a designed seating capacity of 11 or more passengers. A driver may not drive after 13 hours of driving or 14 hours of on-duty time following the most recent period of at least 8 consecutive hours off duty. Under the 160 kilometre radius exemption, the driver must stay within 160 kilometres of the home terminal and be back and released within 15 hours of starting the work-shift.

Training outside Alberta?

This course covers Alberta's provincial rules. Passenger carriers that cross a provincial or international border, such as interprovincial charter operators, follow the federal hours of service regulations instead.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Do hours of service rules apply to school bus drivers in Alberta?

Alberta's provincial regulation applies to commercial passenger vehicles with a designed seating capacity of 11 or more passengers, which includes buses used for student transportation. Check with your school division or operator for how they apply the rules to your routes.

What about split shifts with morning and afternoon runs?

The course covers duty status and the definition of a work-shift, which is how time between runs is treated. Under the 160 kilometre radius exemption, the driver must still return and be released within 15 hours of starting the work-shift.

How much does the course cost?

The course is 44.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months, which suits an operator training every driver.

It teaches the same Alberta rules from the same topic outline, listed for school bus and passenger bus or van operators. Freight carriers can use the general Alberta provincial hours of service course.

Does it cover vehicle inspections?

No. It covers hours of service. Bus and van fleets can pair it with Trip Inspections for Buses and Vans for the daily inspection.

How long is the certificate valid?

36 months from the completion date.

How long does the course take?

About 45 minutes, and it can be completed in more than one sitting.
