You set up a training profile before you pay. It asks for more than a normal checkout does - your employer, your role, an emergency contact - because this is a training record, not a shopping cart. It is the file an auditor asks to see, and it is why you can pull your certificate up years from now instead of hunting for a PDF in your email. Give yourself five minutes and do it once.

About the course

What this course covers.

Alberta runs its own hours of service rules for carriers that stay inside the province, and they are not the same as the federal rules a long-haul driver learns. A driver who moves between a provincial job and a federal one, or a dispatcher who plans both, needs to know which rule book applies before the shift starts. This course is the Alberta rule book, explained in the order a driver uses it: what duty status they are in, how long the work-shift can run, and what has to be written down.

The course starts with the basics a new driver is often never told: what a Safety Fitness Certificate is, what makes a vehicle a National Safety Code vehicle, and which employees the regulation actually covers. It then works through the four duty statuses, the definition of a work-shift and its limits, mandatory breaks, the reduced rest provision and the rules for co-drivers. The last third covers the exemptions for adverse driving conditions and emergencies, the form and manner of a daily log, how long logs and supporting documents are kept, and the 160 kilometre radius logbook exemption.

That last topic is where most local fleets live. Many Alberta drivers run under the radius exemption and assume it means no rules at all. The course is clear that the exemption removes the logbook, not the work-shift limits, and that the 15 hour limit on the day still applies. Carriers use this course to put a documented training record behind every driver who runs provincially, at a price that makes training a whole local fleet practical.

Course outline

6 modules, start to finish

Each module ends with a short knowledge check before you move on.

  1. Who the Alberta rules apply to

What a Safety Fitness Certificate is, what counts as a National Safety Code vehicle, and which employees fall under the provincial hours of service regulation.

  2. Duty status

The four duty statuses, and how on-duty and off-duty time are defined and recorded.

  3. Work-shift limits

The definition of a work-shift, the driving and on-duty limits within it, mandatory breaks, and the reduced rest provision, with a summary of every limit in one place.

  4. Co-drivers and exemptions

Co-driver requirements and conflict of status, then the exemptions for adverse driving conditions and emergencies and how each one is defined.

  5. Form and manner of the daily log

What a daily log must contain, recording duty status locations, off-duty logs, log retention and supporting documents.

  6. The 160 kilometre radius logbook exemption

When a driver does not need a logbook, why the work-shift limits still apply, the record of duty status that replaces the log, and the 15 hour on-duty limit.

  • Commercial drivers working for Alberta carriers that operate within the province
  • Local and regional drivers who run under the 160 kilometre radius logbook exemption
  • Dispatchers and fleet coordinators who plan shifts for provincially regulated drivers
  • Safety coordinators who keep driver training records for a carrier profile or pre-qualification platform
  • Drivers moving from federal, interprovincial work into an Alberta-only operation

What you walk away with

Why it matters for compliance

Alberta's Drivers' Hours of Service Regulation (AR 317/2002) sets the rules for provincially regulated carriers. Under it, a driver may not drive after 13 hours of driving or 14 hours of on-duty time following the most recent period of at least 8 consecutive hours off duty. A driver using the 160 kilometre radius exemption must stay within 160 kilometres of the home terminal and be back and released from work within 15 hours of starting the work-shift. Carriers remain responsible for knowing the current regulation; this course provides the documented training behind it.

Training outside Alberta?

This course covers Alberta's provincial rules only. Drivers who cross a provincial or international border, or who work for a federally regulated carrier, follow the federal Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations and should take a federal hours of service course instead.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

How much does this Alberta hours of service course cost?

The course is 54.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course. A free On-Track Safety corporate account gives 20 percent off every course for the first three months, which suits a carrier training a whole fleet.

What is the difference between this course and Provincial Hours of Service (Alberta)?

Both teach Alberta's provincial hours of service rules from the same topic outline: duty status, work-shift limits, exemptions, log form and manner, and the 160 kilometre radius exemption. Compare the price and the listed duration and choose the one that suits your drivers; either gives a certificate of completion for the Alberta rules.

Do Alberta drivers follow provincial or federal hours of service rules?

It depends on the carrier and the trip. A carrier that operates only within Alberta generally falls under the provincial regulation. A carrier that crosses a provincial or international border is federally regulated and follows the federal rules. If you are not sure which applies to your operation, check your Safety Fitness Certificate and talk to Alberta Transportation before you train.

If I run under the 160 km radius exemption, do I still need this training?

Yes. The radius exemption removes the requirement to keep a daily log when its conditions are met, but it does not remove the work-shift limits. The driver still has to return and be released within 15 hours, and the carrier still has to keep a record of duty status and supporting documents. The course covers exactly what still applies.

How long is the certificate valid?

The certificate of completion is valid for 36 months from the date the course is passed.

Can I take the course on my phone?

Yes. The course runs in a mobile browser, saves your place, and can be finished in short sittings. Most drivers complete it in under an hour.
