What this course covers.
PDIC is a defensive driving course written for people who drive for a living. Alberta Transportation sets what an approved PDIC must cover and how the final exam works. The Class 1 version builds tractor-trailer material into every part of the course.
Carriers use PDIC in a few ways. Some make it part of the hiring standard for new drivers. Some use it as a refresher, or as a follow-up after a collision, a roadside inspection problem or a complaint. Drivers also take it on their own to take demerit points off their licence.
You work through narrated lessons at your own pace, with a short quiz at the end of each one. When you pass the final exam, the course provider notifies Alberta Transportation and your completion certificate is sent within 10 business days.

Pass each lesson quiz and the final exam at 80% or higher. You get three attempts at each lesson quiz and one retake of the final exam after 24 hours. On a pass, the course provider notifies Alberta Transportation and a government-approved completion certificate is sent within 10 business days. A PDIC pass can remove up to three demerit points from an Alberta licence, once every two years.

Why it matters for compliance
Alberta Transportation approves PDIC courses. An approved course is written for Class 1 to 4 drivers, runs at least six hours, and ends with a 40-question final exam that you pass at 80%. Alberta delivers PDIC through licensed driver training schools and certified employee driver training agencies. The province does not make PDIC mandatory for every commercial driver, but many carriers require it.
Training outside Alberta?
