About the course
What this course covers.
Back injuries rarely announce themselves. A worker lifts the same way every day, the strain builds gradually, and by the time the pain is bad enough to see a doctor the damage is done. Once a back has been injured it is easy to injure again. The good news is the same pattern works in reverse: a worker who lifts correctly every day builds habits that protect the back for a career.
This course starts with how the back works, so the advice that follows makes sense rather than sounding like a list of rules. It covers the types of back injury and the factors that raise the risk, some of which a worker controls and some of which they do not: aging and disease, physical conditions, physical stress and posture, and overexertion and improper lifting.
The practical half sets out the steps for proper lifting, when and how to use lifting equipment instead of muscle, and personal prevention strategies a worker can use on and off the job. It finishes with the steps to take if a back injury does occur, because early reporting and early care make a real difference to recovery. It suits any workplace where people lift, carry, push or pull as part of the job.

Why it matters for compliance
Musculoskeletal injuries are among the most common workplace injuries in Canada, and provincial OHS rules address them; Alberta's OHS Code includes a section on training to prevent musculoskeletal injury within its part on lifting and handling loads. This course provides general back injury prevention training; employers should also assess their specific lifting tasks and controls.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
Who should take a back injury prevention course?
- Anyone whose job involves lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling, from warehouse and construction workers to health care and retail staff, and the supervisors who assign that work.
Does the course teach proper lifting technique?
- Yes. It sets out the steps for proper lifting and explains when lifting equipment should be used instead of lifting by hand.
How much does the course cost?
- The course is 79.99 CAD per seat. Ask our safety experts for 10 percent off your first course, or a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months.
How is this different from Back Safety and Injury Prevention?
- Both cover back injury prevention. This course explains more about how the back works and the risk factors, including aging and disease. Back Safety and Injury Prevention is a shorter course aimed at physically demanding jobs.
What should I do if I hurt my back at work?
- Report it to your supervisor right away and follow your workplace's procedure. The course covers the steps to take if a back injury occurs, because early reporting and care help recovery.
Does the certificate expire?
- No expiry period is listed for this course.
Can lifting equipment replace lifting technique?
- Where a load is heavy, awkward or lifted often, equipment is usually the better control. The course covers when to use lifting equipment and how to use it, as well as how to lift correctly when lifting by hand is the right choice.
