About the course

What this course covers.

Propane turns up on almost every kind of worksite - heating a trailer, running a forklift, firing equipment - and that familiarity is the problem. Propane is heavier than air, it pools in low spots, and a leaking or mishandled cylinder is a fire and explosion waiting for an ignition source. This course gives the workers who handle propane the knowledge to treat it with the respect it needs.

The course starts with the legal requirements and the science of propane, so a worker understands how the gas behaves, then works through the two cylinder systems they will meet on the job, the personal protective equipment to wear, and how to inspect a cylinder before it is used. It covers transporting and storing cylinders safely and finishes with the emergency situations a propane worker has to be ready for, including emergency first aid.

Companies use Propane Handling and Exchange to qualify workers who exchange forklift cylinders, handle propane on a construction site, or transport and store cylinders, and to give an auditor or a prime contractor a documented training record. The certificate is consistent with the CSA B149.2 Propane Storage and Handling Code.

  3. Personal protective equipment

The personal protective equipment a worker wears when handling, exchanging, or transporting propane cylinders.

  4. Inspecting, transporting, and storing cylinders
