About the course

What this course covers.

ATVs and UTVs are recreational vehicles as much as work tools, and that familiarity is the danger. A machine that gets a worker into the bush quickly is also a machine with a narrow track, a high centre of gravity, and operating limits that punish a careless rider. This course gives field and outdoor workers the knowledge to operate an off-highway vehicle safely and effectively.

Using live-action demonstrations, animated diagrams, and interactive activities, the course covers ATV and UTV components, the hazards common to off-highway vehicle operation and how to control them, incident reporting, and pre-ride and post-ride inspections. It works through start-up and drive-system checks, best practices for operation, and driving on hills, slippery surfaces, soft ground, and sand, then finishes with loading, winching, securing the machine for transport, storage, and annual maintenance.

Companies use ATV/UTV Safety to train oil and gas, forestry, survey, and utility crews who use off-highway vehicles to reach a worksite, and to give a documented training record.

What learners say

Trusted by Canadian crews

4.4 / 5 from 887 learner reviews
  • Our survey crews live on quads and side-by-sides. The hill and soft-ground driving section is the part that keeps a new worker from rolling one.

    Wade M.

    Field Operations Lead

  • We made it required for anyone issued a machine. The loading and transport section closed a real gap for us.

    Crystal D.

    Safety Coordinator

  • Practical and not padded. The pre-ride inspection routine stuck with me.

Certificate and format

How the course runs

Your certificate

A mark of 80 percent earns the certificate, and the course can be taken up to three times to reach the pass mark. On completion the worker downloads and prints a certificate of completion. The certificate does not carry an expiry date; the course is recommended to be retaken every three years from the completion date to keep the training current.

  • Fully online and self-paced - about 90 minutes of content
  • Live-action demonstrations, animated diagrams, and interactive activities
  • Mobile-friendly - start on a laptop, finish on a phone
  • May be eligible for 0.15 BCRSP CEUs toward the CPD program
  • Pass mark is 80 percent, with up to three attempts

Why it matters for compliance

Occupational health and safety legislation requires that workers are trained and competent for the equipment they operate. Where a job uses an ATV or UTV to reach a worksite, that machine is part of the hazard assessment, and this course provides the documented training record a COR auditor or a contractor pre-qualification platform looks for.
