About the course

What this course covers.

A fall from height is one of the most common causes of serious workplace injury and death in Canada. Fall protection is the system that catches a worker, or stops the fall before it starts - but only if the worker understands prevention, restraint, and arrest, and uses the equipment correctly. This course delivers that understanding.

The course is CSA-compliant and built for both construction and general industry. It works through the fundamentals of fall prevention, restraint, and arrest, the equipment a system uses, how to inspect that equipment before every use, using fall protection in operation, the hazards it has to manage, and planning a rescue after a fall has happened.

The course is the classroom portion of fall protection training. On completion the worker receives a checklist the employer uses to observe them applying the training in the field. Companies use it to train workers before any work at height and to give a documented training record.

Course outline

5 modules, start to finish

Each module ends with a short knowledge check before you move on.

  1. Fall protection fundamentals

The difference between fall prevention, fall restraint, and fall arrest, and where each one applies.

  2. Equipment

The fall protection equipment used across construction and general industry, and what each part does.

  3. Inspections

How to inspect fall protection equipment before every use so a system can be trusted to hold.

  4. Operations and hazards

Using a fall protection system on the job and the hazards the system has to manage.

  5. Rescue

Planning for and carrying out a rescue after a fall, because an arrested fall is not the end of the emergency.

    Dwight K.

    Site Supervisor

  • CSA-compliant and accepted by our prime contractor. The inspection and rescue sections are the parts that matter most.

    Carolyn M.

    Safety Coordinator

  • I have worn a harness for years and the rescue planning section still taught me something. A fall is not over when the arrest happens.

Certificate and format

How the course runs

Your certificate

A mark of 80 percent earns the certificate, and the course can be taken up to three times to reach the pass mark. On completion the worker downloads and prints a certificate of completion valid for two years from the completion date, along with a field checklist the employer uses to observe the worker applying the training.

  • Fully online and self-paced - roughly two and a half to four hours of content
  • CSA-compliant, for both construction and general industry
  • Mobile-friendly - start on a laptop, finish on a phone
  • Includes an employer field-observation checklist
  • Pass mark is 80 percent, with up to three attempts

Why it matters for compliance

Occupational health and safety legislation requires fall protection for work at height, and CSA standards set the equipment and practice. This course delivers the CSA-compliant classroom portion of fall protection training and the documented record a COR auditor or a contractor pre-qualification platform looks for.
