About the course

What this course covers.

Intermediate rigging is where a rigger moves from following a rig to building one - choosing the sling, reading the capacity chart, accounting for the angle, and directing the lift. This course covers the practices and techniques for safely slinging and rigging loads, and is designed for rigging and supervisory personnel who work with all types of hoisting equipment.

Across three modules, the course covers pre-lift hazard assessments and the responsibilities of the owner, operator, and supervisor. It works through wire rope construction, safety factors and safe working load limits, rope and sling inspections, hoist line installation procedures, the types of rigging hitches, and determining sling types, sizes, and configurations using sling capacity charts. It finishes with D/d ratios, sling centre of gravity, and crane and hoist signals. It is designed to help satisfy CSA Z150-98 and adheres to ANSI and ASME standards.

Companies use the course to build intermediate rigging competency and to give a documented training record an auditor or a contractor pre-qualification platform looks for.

What learners say

Trusted by Canadian crews

4.4 / 5 from 1,070 learner reviews
  • The capacity-chart and D/d-ratio sections are where intermediate rigging actually lives. Riggers finish this able to build a rig, not just hook one up.

    Garrett P.

    Crane and Rigging Supervisor

  • Good step up from the basics. The wire rope and safe-working-load content is what our auditor wants documented for our riggers.

    Melanie K.

    Safety Coordinator

  • The inspection and hitch sections were the useful parts. Solid intermediate course.

Certificate and format

How the course runs

Your certificate

A mark of 80 percent earns the certificate, and the course can be taken up to three times to reach the pass mark. On completion the worker downloads and prints a certificate of completion valid for three years from the completion date.

  • Fully online and self-paced - about 3 to 3.5 hours of content across three modules
  • Designed to help satisfy CSA Z150-98 and adheres to ANSI and ASME standards
  • Mobile-friendly - start on a laptop, finish on a phone
  • Built for rigging and supervisory personnel
  • Pass mark is 80 percent, with up to three attempts

Why it matters for compliance

Occupational health and safety legislation requires that workers who rig loads are trained and competent, and CSA Z150 sets the practice. This course builds intermediate rigging competency and provides the documented training record a COR auditor or a contractor pre-qualification platform looks for.
