About the course

What this course covers.

A pre-trip inspection is only as good as the driver doing it, and a defect walked past in the yard is a defect carried onto the highway. Most inspection courses just hand a driver a list of items to check. This one is built around professional video that shows a driver how to actually perform the inspection, so the walk-around becomes a skill rather than a checklist read in a hurry.

The course prepares a driver for the inspection, including the safety precautions to take, then spends real time on the air brake system - how it works and how to test it - because that is where a missed defect does the most harm. It works through the defects and major defects found on a vehicle inspection form, what each one means and what to do about it, then demonstrates a complete inspection from start to finish.

Fleets use Daily Pre-Trip Inspection to train new drivers on the inspection properly, to cut the roadside violations that come from a rushed walk-around, and to give a carrier safety review or a contractor pre-qualification platform the documented training record they expect.

Course outline

4 modules, start to finish

Each module ends with a short knowledge check before you move on.

  1. Preparing for the pre-trip inspection

How a driver should approach a pre-trip inspection and the safety precautions to take, plus how National Safety Code Standard 13 relates to the CVSA roadside inspection an enforcement agency may perform.

  2. Inspecting the air brake system

How an air brake system works and how to properly perform an air brake test, with examples of possible defects and the steps to take when a brake problem is found.

  3. Defects and major defects

A close look at the inspection items on a vehicle inspection form, the potential vehicle defects behind each one, and what to do when a defect is discovered.

  4. Performing the inspection

The first three modules brought together: the steps for performing a complete vehicle inspection, demonstrated start to finish on video.

Certificate and format

How the course runs

Your certificate

Testing runs throughout the course and a mark of 80 percent earns the certificate; the course can be repeated twice if the pass mark is not met on the first attempt. On completion the driver downloads and prints a certificate of completion valid for three years from the completion date.

  • Fully online and self-paced - about 60 minutes of content
  • Professional video demonstrations of the inspection, not just a checklist
  • Mobile-friendly - start on a laptop, finish on a phone
  • Instant access and an instant certificate on completion
  • Pass mark is 80 percent, with two retakes included

Why it matters for compliance

National Safety Code requirements, adopted into provincial and federal transportation legislation, require commercial drivers to inspect a vehicle before a trip. Daily Pre-Trip Inspection provides the documented training record a carrier safety review or a contractor pre-qualification platform looks for when checking that drivers are trained.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

How much does the Daily Pre-Trip Inspection course cost?

The course is 89.99 CAD per seat. Use code ONTRACK10 at checkout for 10 percent off an individual purchase, or set up a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months when training a fleet.

How long does the course take?

The course is about 60 minutes of content and is fully self-paced, so a driver can finish it in one sitting or across a couple of shorter sessions without losing their place.

Does the Daily Pre-Trip Inspection certificate expire?

Yes. The certificate of completion is valid for three years from the completion date shown on it, after which the driver retakes the course to stay current.

How is this different from the Daily Trip Inspection course?

Daily Pre-Trip Inspection is a video-led, practical course that shows a driver how to perform the inspection and test the air brakes. The Daily Trip Inspection course focuses on National Safety Code Standard 13, Schedule 1 - the regulated inspection report a driver records and reports. Many fleets train drivers on both.

Is this course recognised across Canada?

The course is built on National Safety Code vehicle inspection requirements, which are adopted into transportation legislation across the provinces, and the certificate states completion clearly for use as proof of training in an audit or for a job requirement.
