About the course
What this course covers.
A boom truck puts a crane on a chassis, and that combination is only as safe as the operator's understanding of its limits. Overload the boom, set the outriggers wrong, or misread the load chart, and the truck tips or drops its load. This course trains an operator to inspect, plan, and run a boom truck without finding those limits the hard way.
The course covers hydraulic boom truck components, the types of inspections a boom truck needs, and the pre-lift hazard assessment done before a pick. It works through the responsibilities of the crane owner, operator, and supervisor, load chart components, net capacity and total load calculations, safe operating practices, outrigger use, rigging, and the standard crane hand signals. It is written to comply with CSA Standard Z150-1998.
The course touches on rigging, and operators are encouraged to pair it with a dedicated rigging course. It is the theory portion of boom truck training; some jurisdictions require a practical evaluation on the equipment to complete certification. Companies use it to qualify boom truck operators and to give a documented training record.

What learners say
Trusted by Canadian crews
The load chart and net capacity sections are the heart of it. An operator who finishes this knows the difference between gross and net capacity, which is where people get hurt.
Travis B.
Crane and Lifting Supervisor
We pair it with a rigging course and a machine evaluation. The outrigger and pre-lift assessment content is solid.
Marie L.
Safety Coordinator
Thorough course. The hand signals and the calculation practice were the parts worth slowing down for.

Certificate and format
How the course runs
Your certificate
A mark of 80 percent earns the certificate, and the course can be repeated twice if the pass mark is not met. On completion the operator downloads and prints a certificate of completion valid for three years from the completion date. Some jurisdictions require an additional practical evaluation on the equipment for full regulatory compliance.
- Fully online and self-paced - about 2 hours of content
- Written to comply with CSA Standard Z150-1998
- Mobile-friendly - start on a laptop, finish on a phone
- Printable reference materials available online
- Pass mark is 80 percent, with up to three attempts
Why it matters for compliance
Occupational health and safety legislation requires that crane and boom truck operators are trained and competent, and CSA Z150 sets the practice. This course is the theory portion of boom truck training and provides the documented record a COR auditor or a contractor pre-qualification platform looks for; a practical evaluation on the equipment completes the certification.
Common questions
Questions buyers ask
How much does the Boom Truck Safety course cost?
- The course is 199.99 CAD per seat. Use code ONTRACK10 at checkout for 10 percent off an individual purchase, or set up a free On-Track Safety corporate account for 20 percent off every course for the first three months when training a crew.
