What are COR and SECOR
It is becoming an industry standard that preferential treatment is given to companies if they possess a Certificate of Recognition (COR or SECOR) as there are more opportunities when bidding on work A COR shows that the employer’s health and safety management system has been evaluated by a certified auditor and meets provincial standards. These standards are established by Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).
The difference between a COR and SECOR is the number of employees the company has during peak times. A SECOR is applicable if you have less than 11 employees (including management). However, if you surpass 10- then you are required to obtain a COR.

How to get a COR or SECOR
To get a COR, you need two things – a Health & Safety Program & a Certifying Partner.

Step 1. Choose a Certifying Partner
Each province in Western Canada has a number of certifying partners that you can achieve a COR certification through. For example, in Alberta, there are 13 Certifying Partners authorized to administer the COR program to employers. You will need to choose a Certifying Partner that has the right fit for your company and industry.
Step 2. Implement a health and safety management system
After you choose a Certifying Partner, we can help you develop a health and safety management system that meets the auditing requirements of your certifying partner. Each partnership has a different audit document, so it is important that your manual is built for the certifying partner that you have chosen. Step 3. Get an Audit
Once you have a health and safety management system in place and have completed at least 3 months of documentation, you’ll need to have it reviewed. To get an audit:
-
for small employers (SECOR) with less than 10 employees, arrange with your Certifying Partner to conduct a self-assessment. We can assist with this process as well to make it as painless as possible.
-
for employers with more than 10 employees (COR), arrange with your Certifying Partner to get an external audit. Book your audit here.
